The Quran (also romanized as Koran) is the central religious text of Islam, believed by Muslims to be a revelation from God. It is organized into 114 chapters, called surahs, which consist of verses. The Quran is written in early Classical Arabic, and is conventionally considered to be a literal transcription of an uncreated heavenly original.
Al-Kareem (Generous, Noble and Honourable) is one of the names of Allah. He gives generously, and He follows through with His promises. He is also forbearing and merciful.
Many passages of the Quran are devoted to describing the eschatological judgment through which God will consign human beings to paradise or hell, and portraying the resulting rewards of the saved and torments of the damned. Other passages contain narratives, some of which centre on biblical persons such as Adam, Moses, Jesus, and Mary. These stories vary in length from brief reminiscences to much longer accounts, such as the 12th surah, which is devoted to the story of Joseph.
The term quran derives from the Arabic verb qaraa, "to read," although there is probably some connection with the Syriac word qeryana, "reading." The Quran was first transmitted only verbally from Muhammad's mouth, but was later put into writing. The earliest known manuscripts are from around the time of Muhammad's death. The Quran was never compiled into a single volume during the lifetime of the Prophet, and the canonical version was established by the caliph Uthman after his death in 632.
